Medical Scholarships Around The Globe

International Guest Scholarships are offered to all young surgeons who have a strong interest in teaching and learning in the field of medicine.

The American College of Surgeons provides this funding for students from countries other than the United States or Canada.

With a total grant of $10,000, scholars will get an opportunity to visit clinical, teaching, and research activities in the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, they can fully participate in the educational activities of the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be between 35 and 50 years old when they submit their application.
• Applicants must have graduated from medical schools and finished their surgical training.
• Applicants must apply their applications from their intended permanent location. 
• After finishing all formal training, applicants who have practiced, taught, or researched surgery for at least one year at their intended permanent location will be considered for processing.

The AMA Minority Scholars Award is a scholarship program offered by the American Medical Association (AMA).

The primary concern of this scholarship program is to support underrepresented minority students in medicine by providing financial assistance and mentorship opportunities.

To apply for the $10,000 grant, nominees should submit a personal essay outlining their professional goals in the medical field and their commitment to minority service.

More importantly, applicants must belong to one of the minority groups underrepresented in the field of medicine. 

Eligibility

• Nominees must be permanent residents of the U.S. with U.S. citizenship.
• Nominees must be first or second-year students.
• Nominees must belong to one of these minority groups: African-American/Black, Native Hawaiian, American Indian, Alaska Native, and Hispanic/Latino.
• Scholars who have previously received this award are not eligible for consideration.

The Physicians of Tomorrow Award is also offered by the American Medical Association (AMA), but it is broader in scope than the AMA Minority Scholars Award.

This program aims to recognize all deserving medical students who have shown excellent performance in the field of medicine.

This scholarship program provides an amount of $10,000 in tuition assistance to applicants who are in their final year of school.

Priority is given to students with outstanding academic achievements but facing financial difficulties in pursuing their medical dreams.

Eligibility

• Candidate must be in their final year of medical school.
• Candidate must have excellent academic achievements with an interest in community services.
• Candidates must have the required credentials such as a transcript, letter of recommendation, other educational certificate, and so on.

The Edith SeVille Coale Scholarships are awarded exclusively to female medical students who possess a deep passion for medical services.

Sponsored by the Zonta Club of Washington, D.C., this grant is provided only to scholars who are either in their second year or entering their third year of medical school.

With an amount between $5,000 to $8,000, this scholarship is granted every May of each year. The primary objective of this program is to support an organization that has been working to empower women from marginalized communities.

Eligibility

• Female medical candidate entering second or third year of medical school
• Must hold above-average academic performance
• Demonstrates financial need
• Candidate must be enrolled in one of the following medical schools: Howard University College of Medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine, The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, or John Hopkins University School of Medicine

Stanford University is one of the top-ranked institutions for medical programs around the world.

Since 1980, the Stanford Medical Scholars Research Program has been providing full funding support to both master's graduates and PhD students. This funding is available for international students as well.

In addition, this program also assists students in conducting their research in the medical school, clinics, hospitals, and throughout the university.

Each year, up to 100 high-achieving students are awarded this scholarship. They also offer funding for international students as well.

 Eligibility

• Applicants must have been enrolled in Stanford's medical program.
• Priority is given to nominees with involvement in community service, leadership roles, or research experiences.
• The applicant should have strong scores in GPA, MCAT, and other academic achievements.

Funding amounts at Harvard Medical School are determined based on the financial needs of the applicant and their family.

Therefore, students from lower-income backgrounds or those unable to afford the full cost of tuition are eligible for this scholarship. 

Those students who are granted full scholarships will benefit from both the coverage of tuition and mandatory fees. However, the chance of getting a full funding package is rare in this program.

Moreover, eligibility for funding is determined by subtracting the institutional expected family contribution from tuition and mandatory fees. The maximum period for funding is limited to eight semesters of full tuition costs.

• The applicant must be enrolled in either a master's or MD program at Harvard Medical School.
• The applicant should demonstrate financial need.

The United Health Foundation provides scholarships to medical students who come from diverse backgrounds. The key objective for funding is to encourage minority physicians to participate in community service activities as they develop their critical skills.

To get this scholarship, applicants must be from underrepresented groups in medicine, show leadership qualities, and have a commitment to serve minority communities. It offers an award of $7,000, and students must be in their second to fourth years.

• Applicant must belong to from underrepresented minority community such as: such as African American, Hispanic/Latino, Alaska, or Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
• Applicant must be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident
• Applicant must have engaged in community service 
• Applicant must demonstrate financial needs

NHS Student Bursaries is one of the prominent funding bodies in the UK. It offers a large amount of funding every year.

To receive this grant, students should be enrolled in subjects like medicine, nursing, dentistry, midwifery, or any other course related to health professions.

Students who receive these bursaries are those who have the intention of working in the National Health Service once they complete their studies. This funding is available only to residents of England.

Eligibility

• Candidate must have been living in the UK for at least three years before the start of the academic year
• Candidate needs to demonstrate financial need
• Candidate must have satisfactory academic progress

The John Snow Scholarship is offered by the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM).

This funding is specifically provided to medical students in Australia and New Zealand who are interested in public health. The purpose of the grant is to raise awareness about public health as a career option.

Eligibility

• The nominee must be a medical student studying in a medical school at an Australian or Aotearoa New Zealand university
