Spices and Herbs for Homemade Cajun Seasoning

Cajun seasoning is a staple in Louisiana cuisine, a wonderful blend of Native American, West African, Caribbean, and French cooking styles. The seasoning is a delicious spice blend with a little kick, but you can adjust the spice level by adding more or less cayenne pepper.
You can also make it at home with common pantry spices. If you are interested in making your blend, you need these spices for Cajun seasoning.
1. Paprika
Paprika is a spice made from dried and ground red peppers. It is not spicy and contributes a sweet and slightly smoky taste with its subtle fruity and peppery hints to the seasoning. It also balances the heat from cayenne pepper and other spices.

2. Kosher Salt

Kosher salt has a milder, cleaner flavor than table salt, which prevents your Cajun dishes from becoming bitter and overpoweringly salty. This is especially important when dealing with a boldly flavored spice blend.

3. Garlic Powder

7. Dried Oregano

There are many substitutes for dried oregano, like dried dill, marjoram, parsley, and sage.

As mentioned above, not every Cajun seasoning has the same flavor and aroma because of the different ingredients. The first nine ingredients are indispensable in a Cajun seasoning, but some optional additions add unique twists and subtle nuances to your Cajun blend.
- Cumin: Offers a warm, earthy, and slightly smoky flavor with a touch of heat. It pairs well with cayenne pepper.
- Ghost pepper powder: A tiny pinch of ghost pepper powder is insanely hot and incredibly spicy, perfect for the adventurous. Use with caution!

- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (Optional)
Directions
- Gather all ingredients.
- Stir together paprika, salt, garlic powder, oregano, thyme, black pepper, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and red pepper flakes in a bowl until evenly blended
- Store spice mix in an airtight container, away from sunlight to retain its potency longer.
- You can control the heat by either adding more or less cayenne pepper.
